hello

as you can probably tell i haven't really been doing much in terms of 'updating my blog', its currently on hiatus as it looks horrible. i might shut it down soon to force myself to get someone to make a nice website for me when i have a bit more money (if i have a bit more money at any point in my life). but most of my animation work is on my vimeo account apart from my latest short film 'Hogan' which is being screened in several places around the world (some i cant announce yet) so if your going to any film/animation festivals look out for it.

im currently in the middle of production of a new short film which i wont say much a bout except its been really fun making it so far, and excited about both the films i plan to make, which by the end will probably turn me into a unsociable hermit. I will then leave earth and live the rest of my life on the moon.

Hogan at Bristol Encounters

For all my friends and people interested in my work that are based in Bristol 'Hogan' will be part of Bristol Encounters in competition for the Grand Prix award. The full list of screenings will be on the encounters website at the start of October so will update people when that happens. Will be great to see some old faces and hopefully some new ones as i think il definitely be coming to the festival as i enjoyed it a lot when i came two years ago. so yes very happy about this as two of my previous films over the years have failed to get in.

Hogan's first screenings

Hogan is confirmed for its two first screenings the first one being near where i grew it in Birmingham as part of Arts Fest, in Sam Groves Kino 10 screening in the Crescent Theatre on the 10th September. The screening starts at 3.50pm. a big thank you to Sam as he also screened Custard as part of Flatpack festival earlier in the year.

The second being in Canada as part of Giraf 7 animation festival in Calgary. Il put up details of the screening times an what not when i know as the festival isn't till November.

Custard making Italian Debut

just a quick post Custard has been selected at Lago Film festival in Revine Lago in Italy as part of the international competition, which runs from the 22nd to the 30th. So if anyone i know is around there because i know a few people are traveling around (very unlikely your near the festival or even in Italy) and you fancy watching some films you should go along.

Hogan was shown on a tv channel set up by some of the communications students from my college a few weeks ago whilst the RCA Show was going on called 'If not now'. im not sure if anyone caught it, i didn't even know about it but i guess that was its first 'public appearance'. Ive had a few e.mails regarding the film and i dont think i will be putting it online for a while even in private view (i might change my mind). Ive entered it into a handful of festivals but not many and i have no idea how it will be received but hopefully some festivals will enjoy it and screen it.

Im currently planning an installation piece that i would like to do. im not going to say too much about it but it does involve this man.

and the tender pixel dvd Launch is next week on Saturday which my film Custard is apart of. So would be really good to see some
familiar faces down there.

Custard has been selected by the people at Tenderpixel Gallery to be included as part of Tenderflix 2011 where it will be screened as part of a experimental film screening at Rushes Soho Shorts festival. Its also going to be part of the Tenderflix Gallery experimental film DVD and will be screened in house via gallery screenings over the year.

New Short 'Hogan' wins the Daler Rowney drawing prize

I entered my latest short 'Hogan' for the drawing prizes at my college (Royal College of Art) where it was awarded the Daler Rowney Drawing Prize! Which i really didn't expect. Considering the amount of super talented people across all of the courses at the college i was very surprised that they chose my little 1 minute 28 second animation.

an my good friend and class mate Eamonn O'neil won the Tom Bendhem drawing prize! so a massive congratulations to him.

Il be entering the film into some more competitions/festivals/screenings over the next few months an hopefully it will be accepted into some, so people will be able to watch it.

My graduation film from Newport 'Custard' has three screenings in Canada!

It will be screened in competition at the Just for laughs Film Festival as part of the Just for laughs film competition. The festival is between the 24th and 30th of July.

There is a really good east end film festival may day happening on monday May 2nd where over several venues across the east end (bricklane, spitalfields and redchurch street) there are free screenings for short films. Custard is being screened as part of the Whirlygiggles screening at 4.00pm at Verge Bar just at the top of Brick Lane so if anyone that knows me and is thinking of coming along look out for me as il be there (probably being a massive loner). i have had a hair cut so wont be as noticeable as before.

Gorilla film magazine Custard review and screening

Custard will be screened along with a few other short films run by the super guys behind the Gorilla film magazine on the 13th of April at 'look mum no hands cafe' on old street. so if your around that area next wednesday and fancy watching some films you should come a long as its free.

the screening is in support of there 2nd issue which has a review of Custard.

Hello. Just a few things happening at the moment. Custard will be making its North American premiere in a couple of weeks in competition at the Citrus Cel animation festival in Jacksonville which goes on from the 8th to the 10th of April.

where also in the same weekend will be screened in Corfu as part of Be There Festival also in competition.

It was also screened a few weeks ago as part of Underground cinema in the Brain wash screening at Debut next to London bridge which was brilliant. Such a great selection of films and felt very privileged to be amongst them.

An also was screened as part of Flatpack festival in Birmingham last friday evening as part of the KINO funny for nothing screening.

in other news i have been hiding away in various different dark rooms doing my latest film which is practically finished now. just need to do a final sound check and a few tweaks. its been really fun to make but have felt a lot like a social outcast so i look forward to actually talking to people not half asleep or dazed for a while until i start work again on something else. Im not sure when i will put the film online but i will be putting Custard up online for everyone to see very soon. it is online at the moment but still private view with the password being: muffins

Hello

I had a screening for my film Custard on the 19th January as part of the shorts screening called Roto reliefs which happens every month at the Roxy bar in Borough in London where my film was shown along with several live action short films and had to do a Q and A straight after mine was shown.

Just a big thank you to Sheila and everyone else involved as its a great to have people promoting short films and thank you to everyone who were really nice to me and asked for it to be screened twice (probably the biggest compliment ive ever had about my work so thank you very much) at the screening and to the people that have e.mailed me since. it made me really chuffed that so many people seemed to enjoy it. so if you find yourself bored on an evening when its on and want to see some films go along as they are super nice people.

After an out of the blue phone call on a friday night from my friend Luiz Lafayette Stockler i found out that i had got into animated Exeter along with him and another newport graduate and flat mate ben cady. I will be going a long with them both so im sure it will be a really fun weekend. Also the R.C.A where im currently doing my MA is having a screening there which will be showing all there best films from the past 25 years.

My film Custard and Luiz (Vovo) and Ben (The goat and the well) will all be screened on the Friday the 18th of February as part of the best of the west screening.

hello. this post is mainly for people that have only just starting looking at my blog and haven't seen my animation work before. Im coming to the end of my degree now and putting the finishing touches to my final film 'Custard' before i head off to the Royal College of Art in London for two years this september. ive done various bits and bobs mostly in my second year and here they are:

This is my film "Bluuuuurgh". it was originally a film i did for my soundscape excersise. Its currently touring America as part of the new Spike and Mike Sick and Twisted show and has got screened as part of the show at Comic Con San Diego and got shown in the end of festival party at Flip animation festival in Wolverhampton. I think its natural to look at old work and cringe which i do with this but its a film that i learnt a lot from and got me thinking about the processes about how films are made and the different ways they can be structured.

I see my film "I bought some really nice apples the other day" as my Bluuuurgh part 2. In terms of animation and look its pretty much the same. These were a collection of ideas i originally had for "Bluuuuurgh" but never used and thought that some of them were pretty funny and decided to draw them. I decided to record all the sounds from my mouth which is something i sort of regret but in the end i was experimenting and had nothing else to do in a jobless summer in Malvern.

This is a Tv Ident I did for MTV as part of university. I never sent it to MTV maybe i will one day. but i think i wanted to prove to myself that hand drawn can be just as efficient as doing something on the computer as this took me under 4 days to do.

Now these are some really old animations i did at the start of second year. they were all part of the character performance excersise and when i look back doing this was some of the most important work ive done. It taught me some huge lessons about timing and started showing hints of more abstract imagery. Its crazy to think how much i feel i have moved on from this when doing my final film but i still remember working in my tiny room in newport surrounded by paper, pencil sharpenings, freezing cold and fellow animator and general super nice guy ben cady blasting out 80's music in the room next to mine also in an animation coma....................good times.

ive been locked away in my room for a few days on various bits and bobs keeping myself busy:

im trying to design some new business cards. i drew some jam jars and thought they would be pretty good but im not sure. il think of something soon.

I also been talking to Sonic Artist and General really nice guy Kassian Sheppard about letting me animate various bit and bobs over his sounds. After working on my final film i have many parts that have long pauses of sound and was something i wanted to explore a lot more. I won't be working on anything to i have completely finished my film 'Custard' so will probably get something done for the end of May or June. Im thinking something with very simple shapes but we will see.

We had a Critique for our first cuts of our films the other day. i was very nervous as im never really sure how things will go. there are a few things i need to touch up on. im taking out the phone conversation bit and putting something else in and probably removing any sound with my own voice. but its nearly done now. I went to Diverse (Independent music shop in cardiff) today and finally got hold of the new Efterklang album. I never mention music on here but Efterklang are probably my favourite band so i feel i need to make an exception for them. Theres more singing in the new album but its absolutely fantastic and has really brightened up my day. The Last Song 'Natural Tune' is particularly nice.

Yes i have finally got round to redesigning my business cards. My other ones were super hand made ones that i printed on my rubbish printer but they weren't that practical as i kept having to write added information on the back so ive decided to design some that are even more unpractical. but im getting them printed at moo so they should look a bit more "professional" and also gives me the chance to use both sides of the card! so yeah i will just see what they are like and order some more if they are good.

I saw my film all the way through today and it has made me very happy. Im so glad to have finished all the colouring and drawings so i can fully focus on the timing and the sound and finish my dissertation.

This is the first time im going to be able to spend so much time on the sound as its usually something i have rushed in the past so im really excited about experimenting and seeing what works and what doesn't.

Ive also been watching a lot of stuart hilton work at the moment its brilliant.

Animatic Review

I really wasn't sure how the animatic would go down with the lecturers and the rest of the class. its very difficult to see how the film will turn out in the end just from an animatic. I was a loud to not do a standard animatic and do something that would benefit me a lot more because all the animation is straight a head a standard animatic would have been pointless.

When presenting the work i was so nervous like i always am when presenting work as i would rather people just watch it. but i basically explained the concept behind it and the reasons i was doing it and it seemed to go ok.

Leonie who was marking the animatics was full of nice comments about it which is always good. Mainly things about me being very individual and that i should just carry on what im doing and that im "on another planet to everyone else".

with every presentation i do is either hit or miss because of the way i am and how i work. so to hear the comments she said was very relieving.

But the new show is touring in cinemas across America as we speak which is brilliant!

A lot has happend since i last updated. Just getting through my dissertation at the moment which is about surrealism in animation. But here are some tests ive done for my final film. The film doesnt have a title yet and is based on a stream of consiousness. So my final film is really coming along now after a few tutorials. Ive made sure i have spoken to each tutor as each one of them has very different opinions to the other and they have helped me out so much. The best way to describe the imagery in the film is as an stream of consciousness.

I particularly dont like that term to describe it but il think of something better.

Lots of news recently. I have nearly finished my main film "i bought some really nice apples the other day" just needs all putting together now so im excited about that. but in the mean time heres my short "Can i have a egg sandwich, a few planes and a glass of orange juice please".

We also had a freshers party for the art students which was fun but drank far too much free red wine whilst trying to serve people. i did these posters the night before to try and get more people to come. i think it worked mostly because of the promise of free drink.

and finally "Bluuuuurgh" is going to be shown at Flip animation festival in the late night showing on the 7th of November which is good news.

Two new films!

Over the summer Argos didnt have any jobs so ive been stuck in Malvern doing lots of animation. Im moving to Cardiff at the start of September to film both the films, edit and add the sound on which has been recorded on a really old tape player (not sure how that will do but we will see, i think it might work).

Im pleased to say that Bluuuurgh went down very well at comic con. The contract is signed and Bluuurgh will now be officially part of the new Spike and Mike show that will be touring all over the world. Just a huge thank you to Spike for this opportunity and my lecturers and class mates from the film school of Wales for all the support over the last couple of months.

we got asked to do an 8 second ident. i whipped this out over a weekend. for some reason i feel its a bit of a step back for me and looking back would have liked to use some zooms and what not. but it was really fun to make and i hope people find it atleast midly......................interesting?

heres a film i helped work on with Sarah Williams, Ben Cady and jessica wainwright who are all very lovely people and very good animators. the films about apathy in the modern world. it was also my first experience with after effects which was a bit tricky but i am very happy with the out come. and if you get the chance check out ben, sarah and jess's animations as they all have some brilliant work.

big scary monster records had a little competition to design a cover for a really good band called native. so i churned this out just before the deadline but it didnt get chosen. made me want to do some more illustration so i will whip up some of the drawings when i find a good scanner to scan them in with.
